NEW YORK - Political talk show host Glenn Beck, whose show on Fox News is coming to an end, made his comeback official on Tuesday.
Mercury Radio Arts, Beck’s multi-media production company, on Tuesday unveiled GBTV, a live streaming video network that will feature Beck’s new daily two-hour show, which launches Sept. 12, and other original and licensed programming.
Starting Tuesday and running through the launch of Beck’s new show, the network will feature a behind-the-scenes reality show about the making of GBTV.
Programs will be broadcast in HD and be available live or on-demand on the network, which already has more than 80,000 paying subscribers, according to the company.
Subscribers are charged $4.95 per month for access to Beck’s week-day 5-7pm ET show, or $9.95 for GBTV Plus, which offers the complete network of programs. For a limited time, all new subscribers can join at the $4.95 rate.
The company said GBTV will use a hybrid business model using both subscriptions and advertising.
"GBTV is the future," said Beck. "The confines of traditional media no longer apply. GBTV is about getting active in the community, participating in stories and finding new ways to deliver news, information and entertainment directly to the audience."
Wednesday night at 7pm ET, Beck will host a free streaming event on glennbeck.com to discuss GBTV.
Beck's live show will come from a newly-built set designed by the host and his team at NEP Studios in midtown Manhattan. It will include contributors, such as S.E. Cupp and Brian Sack.
Joel Cheatwood, a former Fox News Channel executive who joined Mercury earlier this year, serves as president of programming for all of GBTV and will oversee Beck’s show.
GBTV said it will launch with two other programs - a six-camera simulcast of Beck’s three hour radio show and The 4th Hour starring Pat Gray and Stu Burguiere.
The network has also signed a development deal with author Brad Thor.
Mercury’s long relationship with radio giant Clear Channel Communications will lead to the promotion of GBTV across over 100 of Clear Channel’s radio stations, reaching over 13 million listeners per month.
"We’ve had a long history of success with every business that Glenn and Mercury have brought to us," said John Hogan, president and CEO, Clear Channel Radio. "We’re thrilled to be able to provide a broad promotional platform for GBTV and to promote Mercury’s vision of the future to millions of consumers."
Christopher Balfe, president and COO of Mercury Radio Arts, will oversee all of GBTV. "Lots of people are talking about the digital content revolution, but few are willing to risk it all and place a huge bet on the future," Balfe said.
